AN ANSWER TO "THE MIND OF MAN"

A Book Pushed by BJU

Every month as I begin these BFT UPDATES, I wonder what I will say and what would interest you the most about what the BIBLE FOR TODAY has been doing lately.

I suppose a BIG HIGHLIGHT was Wednesday, February 23rd! That was the day the delivery of twenty-seven boxes of books came to our door steps! Yes, TWO THOUSAND copies of Dr. Waite’s latest book, FUNDAMENTALIST MIS-INFORMATION OF BIBLE VERSIONS arrived via a B-I-G semi-truck to our front door. Two of our BFT staff--sons Dan and Don--helped their Dad unload box after box of this maroon-covered book. That’s the new book with a tiger tramping on the words Bible Versions in blazing yellow. Quickly, I moved the church coat rack half out of the hall into the parlor (our former dining room) to make room for the hand truck laden with boxes loaded with books. "Do not touch the antique marble-top table," I warned, "It’s a family heirloom!" It belonged to my husband’s Great Grandmother, ADELINE PEIRCE. Her grandfather, JOHN CLIFFORD settled Wellington, Ohio in 1818, with four other people. He was the first preacher and she was the first teacher in town--all in their home--just like their great, great grandson, D. A. WAITE.

Stealthily the books were skillfully squeezed between the banister and the table, and soon found themselves stacked at the foot of the basement stairs. Who would have thought that this big brick house that was perfect for our family of seven would be a depository for Bibles and gospel literature?

Fundamentalist MIS-INFORMATION on Bible Versions

A BOOK WRITTEN BY Dr. D. A. WAITE

Fundamentalist MIS-INFORMATION on Bible Versions (PB2974 @ $7.00 +$3 S&H) has been a long-time coming! At least, that’s how it seemed to me. It all started on July 4, 1999, with the release of FROM THE MIND OF GOD TO THE MIND OF MAN at a book launch at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina where Dr. Mark Minnick, a teacher in the Bible department at BJU, is the pastor. An audio tape was sent to my husband, as well as the book, by two separate individuals-- friends of this ministry. Dr. Waite had heard of the book when we were attending the annual July DEAN BURGON SOCIETY meeting in Indianapolis. He was told that THE MIND OF GOD TO THE MIND OF MAN had been sold by the hundreds at the July ‘99 World Congress of Fundamentalists that had been held on the campus of Bob Jones University. Also, it has been reported that Dr. Bob Jones III held up the book before that wide audience saying it was "the most significant book for fundamentalism in this decade--No, in this century!"

Soon after learning of the publication of THE MIND OF MAN book, which was hatched in the BJU president’s office with the encouragement of retired missionary, Dr. J. B. Williams, my husband began answering the book’s mIS-INFORMATION on his half hour BIBLE FOR TODAY WEEKLY radio programs (BFT/157-160 @ $12+$3 S&H). Many of you have ordered these audio tape radio programs to hear for yourself the ONE HUNDRED & EIGHTEEN PLUS points of MIS-INFORMATION that are being fed to fundamentalists all over the world with the aid of Bob Jones University’s influence.

No one need tell the world in these present, political days how influential Bob Jones University is today. Just having a presidential hopeful speak at the University has caused such an uproar in the United States that I’m not sure what damage the fall-out will have on the candidates or the voters--to say nothing of the harm it has caused that fundamental school and others who have joined with that South Carolina university in much of their thinking and positions. Even though Dr. Waite speaks about the textual fault taught at the famous (and now infamous) school, we do support many of its fundamentalist stands and teachings which HAVE, in my opinion, been misrepresented as far as some of its conservative views are concerned. Perhaps you know that our children were educated at BJU and they received an excellent education. It is with personal hurt that my husband and I have had to come out boldly against the Greek Text stance of the school. As you known Dr. Waite, the DEAN BURGON SOCIETY, and THE BIBLE FOR TODAY defend the TEXTUS RECEPTUS Greek Text that underlies the King James Bible, while the BJU Greek department teaches and defends the Nestle Aland/United Bible Society/Westcott-Hort-type Greek texts that underlie versions like the NIV, NASV, RSV, NRSV, the JERUSALEM BIBLE, etc. In my opinion, using only the King James Bible on the platform is contradicted by the use of the wrong Greek text in the classroom. After Bob Jones University’s change of mind on interracial dating, my husband hopes BJU will change its mind on its Greek textual determination.

CORRUPT TEXTS AT BOB JONES

Let me quote from page 13 of my husband’s new book, Fundamentalists MIS-INFORMATION on Bible Versions, when referring to the content of the PENSACOLA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 1998 VIDEO on Bible versions:

The video was factually accurate. It told of this false theory going from England to Princeton Theological Seminary . . . in through Benjamin B. Warfield. It also explained that a man by the name of Dr. Brockenshire studied these false theories at Princeton under Warfield and then came to Bob Jones University and passed along to his various students this same false Greek text and theory. The video mentioned that the same text and theory was accepted by Dr. A. T. Robertson at Southern Baptist Seminary Louisville, Kentucky, by Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer (my teacher for four years) at Dallas Theological Seminary, and then through BJU graduates, by various other schools.

THE TEXTUS RECEPTUS A MODEL T FORD

I HOPE THAT YOU GET MY HUSBAND’S NEW BOOK!!--all 144 pages of it! (Fundamentalist MIS-INFORMATION on Bible Versions,  #PB2974 @ $7.00+$3.00 S&H). It is chock-full of facts and excitement to refute the MIS-INFORMATION that is being sent hither and yon to garrison the false Westcott & Hort persuasion.

What kind of MIS-INFORMATION is this? Pastor Ashbrook is just as bad in his putting the cart before the horse in this matter as he was with the Textus Receptus/Erasmus MIS-INFORMATION. He’s saying that the text that underlies our King James Bible, the Traditional Text (Textus Receptus) representing over 5,210 manuscripts, is like the "Model T Ford" that has served its usefulness and now must be abandoned for newer models. What kind of MIS-INFORMATION on Bible versions is this? I believe that Textus Receptus (the Received Text), that underlies our King James Bible, contains the very Words that Peter, Paul, John, James, and the other New Testament writers penned. Have those Words, like the "Model T Ford," gone out of style?. . ."

IS THE KING JAMES BIBLE "DIVISIVE"?

Those who leave a church which is not using the King James Bible are not being "divisive." This is MIS-INFORMATION. Why is it "divisive" to use only the King James Bible? Were all the godly men of all the centuries from 1611 till the new versions came into existence "divisive" because they used only the King James Bible?

Now it is a rather different matter if those who trust and use only the King James Bible were to stay in that church and argue about this issue. If they did that, that could be "divisive."

People have every right to go to a church that preaches from and believes in the King James Bible as the most accurate English version in existence today. . . In fact, they have every right to leave a church whose pastor, though he may use the King James Bible, corrects it repeatedly by referring to the false Greek text of Westcott and Hort. They have every right to leave any church not using what they consider to be the best version in English, the right Bible.

NO MENTION OF SCRIVENER OR BURGON

By way of preliminary observation, let me say that it is very strange that, in a chapter about New Testament Greek manuscripts, Dr. Minnick would not say one word about two of the greatest scholars in New Testament manuscript and textual research, Dr. Frederick Scrivener or Dean John William Burgon.

SCRIVENER’S ANNOTATED GREEK NEW TESTAMENT

"CRY FREETOWN"

Did you happen to see the television program called "CRY FREETOWN"? It aired recently on CNN. A SIERRA LEONE photographer/reporter took the videos of the horrible ATROCITIES that happened in his country. He smuggled his coverage out of the land. He was disturbed that so much military help went to Kosovo when the murderous plight of his fellow West Africans was far worse than anything there in Europe. As we watched the TV, Dr. Waite and I saw children and adults shot and beaten. It was the same as what our Liberian friends told us they’d experienced from the rebels in Liberia. All those children drugged and made to kill and hack off body parts!

We have two Liberian West Africans who faithfully attend The Bible For Today Baptist Church here in Collingswood. We knew them at the refugee camp in Sierra Leone. Sando is Pastor Joah’s sister-in-law and her husband, Richard, Kota, was a deacon in the REFUGE BAPTIST CHURCH there in Monrovia. That church began in the refugee camp in Sierra Leone. We were there. In fact, THE BIBLE FOR TODAY supplied the funds for the zinc roof, cement floors, etc. for that church pavilion building, as well as other needs. Richard told me that he could not watch more than ten minutes of the video that we made for him. It made him ill! It brought back sickening memories! A few years ago, when we drove into the Waterloo Refugee Camp (prior to all the killings in Sierra Leone), we were stopped in the dead of the African night at a checkpoint by soldiers with long weapons pointing at us. (They were communist weapons--AK-something or other.) I thought we would be forced to spend the night at the checkpoint by their bonfire. To be truthful, I was more afraid of the mosquitoes than the soldiers. How naive!

A PREDICTION CAME TRUE

Maybe it was fifteen years ago--perhaps twelve, time goes so swiftly--that I heard a young missionary speak at the church we attended. He was a communicator, tall, nice looking, and burdened for his European mission field. More than that, there was a certain something about him that exuded "command." I said to my husband--but I don’t think he was listening, "Some day that man will be the president of the Association of Baptist for World Evangelism (ABWE)." You see, I was especially interested in him, but for a different reason than his wealthy mission organization. (See "ABWE’s Compromise . . ." BFT #2388 @ $16+$4 S&H)

Years ago I used to free-lance for Regular Baptist Press’s Sunday school pass-out papers, and I interested my mother to do the same. It was good therapy for her and I needed the money. In fact, I was able to buy horns for our older sons that way. My mother wrote of a stirring missionary conference at her Gulfport, Florida church. The article was published. God’s Spirit moved in an unusual way that year. She told of a man on the staff of her church who was called to the mission field during the conference. He had a burden for the lost people on the island of Martinique. Without hesitation he took his wife and children there. It was a loss for that local church but a gain to the people with whom they ministered. The family served together--individually and as a group. I remember my mother praying often for them. Her name was Gertrude Sanborn.

One of those little boys who went with his father those many years ago to tell people about Jesus grew up. He became a missionary himself. He is the man I predicted would be the next president. Yes, MICHAEL LOFTIS is now the "president-elect" of ABWE! He will be taking the full reins from WENDELL KEMPTON in September, 2000, according to the Calvary Contender. So you see when I heard rumors of a new president, I couldn’t wait to know his name. MY PREDICTION CAME TRUE!

BFT PURCHASED A NEW MIXER

Yes, we have a new "mixer." It has nothing to do with cooking. It is a small, little black box-like instrument that has buttons and levers, etc. which "mix" video pictures from one camera to the other. I realize these are not professional terms, but, perhaps, you’ll understand what I’m talking about anyhow. Now our videos will look like "big time"--that is, when we know what we are doing. I’ve been going from one camera to the other--we have four set up for our Sunday morning 10 A.M. services and for our Thursday 8 P.M. Bible prayer, questions, & Bible study. Though it is nice for our church video viewers (are you one of them?), it will be especially great for the KING JAMES BIBLE SEMINAR #5 that is coming up JUNE 27-30, 2000. TALKING ABOUT ENGLAND AGAIN

If you remember back in September of ‘98, my husband and I visited Northern Ireland and England, and met new friends there, including old friends like DR. JACK MOORMAN, author of FOREVER SETTLED (BFT #1428 HARDBACK @ $20.00 + $4 S&H). These men were TEXTUS RECEPTUS men who now have a sweeter fellowship around the common textual cause than ever before. Some did not know the others had such convictions.

Sunday evening, after being with PASTOR MOORMAN and his church in Wimbleton, we took about a three-hour train trip to Coventry station where MISSIONARY/PASTOR & Mrs. RUSS IVISON met us. It was good to get away from the rush of London and actually see the green country-side and the English village of BEDWORTH where Calvary Baptist Church met in a small rented facility. It was fun to meet their daughter, Hannah, and others who loaded into their van as we journeyed to the meeting. Right there on the same street was a "spiritualist" church that regularly met and called up the dead at their weekly meetings. My husband reminded me that Bishop Westcott was one of the founders of the Ghostly Guild that looked into such supernatural matters.

As my husband was being introduced, Missionary Ivison said Dr. Waite was dogmatically doctrinally sound, but Christian about it, saying his message was "right with a Biblical attitude." Dr. Waite spoke that early September evening on textual matters. We have videos of that service, as well as the others from our United Kingdom adventures. There are two other messages on the same video ($15.00 + $4 S&H) & audio ($4.00+$3 S&H) as well as our Northern Ireland and England adventures on a second video, too.

I GOT VERY EXCITED WHEN SOMEONE MENTIONED ASTLEY VILLAGE for a village by that name is where FRANCES HAVERGAL lived as a child and was buried. Remember, I portray the hymn writer (BFT #1417 @ $4 +S&H audio and $15+S&H video) like I do Fanny Crosby (BFT #608 @ $4+S&H audio or $15+S&H video). By the time the pastor dropped people off at their homes and we could get to the cemetery behind the beautiful church structure, the sun had set. We stumbled around the church yard looking for her grave and that of her parents. We had no flashlight! I took pictures in the darkness; but found nothing pertaining to the Havergal family. Later Pastor Ivison and his daughter searched in the daylight with no more success than we had in the darkness. It was then that he learned there were six other "Astley" villages in the country.

After the church service and the cemetery, Dr. Waite and I were treated royally to a delicious meal at a quaint English inn which was the original home of Mary Ann (Marian)Evans, known as the famous author, GEORGE ELIOT, the writer of Silas Marner. I like old-fashioned places and things, so really enjoyed the atmosphere. I’m sorry to say that I’ve forgotten the name of the house. The Americana spoke of a place on Foleshill Road in Coventry or another--a cheerful house in Griff. For dessert, Pastor Ivison surprised us with a delicious cake in honor or our fiftieth anniversary as well as one for his wife’s surprise birthday that day! Saying goodbye at the train station was like saying goodbye to old friends. (To be continued)
