THANKFULNESS MUST BE TAUGHT
Washington
recommended it, Lincoln proclaimed it,
Paul
commanded it!
It’s that
time of year again when we think of turkey and family, of traveling and gasoline
prices, of suitcases and pumpkin pies, “HOME” and childhood games, family stress
and misunderstandings. It’s that season of the year, here in
America, that we call for a “THANKSGIVING Day”! The pilgrims started it all in
1623. George Washington recommended it in 1789, President Lincoln proclaimed
it in 1863, and the APOSTLE PAUL COMMANDED IT IN A.D. 64
(Usher) when he enjoined the Colossians
Christians:
“Put on . . . kindness, meekness,
longsuffering, forbearing . . . forgiving . . . AND BE YE THANKFUL.”
(COLOSSIANS 3:12-15)
Some folk forget to say “Thank-you.”
They are
too busy, too tired, too indifferent, or just plain UNTHANKFUL! How
about you? Sometimes I think that “gratitude” has gone out of
style. We have so much. We do so much. We see so much. We just plain get
used to “things” and “life ” and “people.” Our lives are busy with sorrows and
despairs or full of happiness and triumphs. No matter, we have become like the
ungrateful “Nine” Lepers in Jesus’ day
(Luke
17:22).
The other
day a visitor at our church treated us to a Wendy’s lunch. We were
with several of our church people visiting and enjoying one another’s company.
We go there every Sunday afternoon between our morning worship service and
afternoon Bible study. I am used to my husband paying for us. So I forgot to
thank the lady. I remembered this “unthankfulness” last night.
(I’m sure Pastor Waite thanked her, since he was
standing there when she wanted to pay.) But I did not! How bad of me!
How ungrateful! I will write her today or call. I just mention this now
because “thankfulness,” in this busy world, has become passe. We rush
here and we rush there and we take for granted the lovely kindnesses that have
come our way. I guess we are no better than the early Christians in Paul’s day!
They had to be reminded, too. Thanksgiving has to be taught. Yes, God would
have us walk around this world with a thankful heart--even for yogurt at
Wendy’s!
A DIFFERENT SLANT ON
THANKFULNESS
This morning
in our DAILY BIBLE READING, I came across a very different slant on
“thanksgiving.” Jesus said in Luke 6:27-36--in that area of
Scripture--some unusual words. He said to His disciples-- right after giving,
what we call, the BEATITUDES and His four “woes”-- that they should love their
enemies, that they should do good to them that hate them, and that they should
give their other cheek to be smitten when the first one had been hit, that they
should give their coat to those who stole from them, and that they should give
to any one who asks them for something. These are very difficult words to
understand for us here in the USA and our in culture.
I remember
when we were in Liberia and in the refugee camp there in Sierra Leone that the
African people gave of what they did not have to those who had less.
I remember how our driver, whom we liked very much, asked us to take him to the
United States. He said he would drive for us there. We said we could not do
that as we could not afford to hire him. He didn’t understand, for if, in
their culture, someone wanted to live with them, they took them in as
“family” and called them “brother” or “mother.” It was, and
is, different from us. But I ask you, “Is that what Jesus meant?” I
don’t know. But I do know it is what He said.
Then Jesus
went on, in the passage that interested me today, that we should treat people
like we would like to be treated. He asked, “What THANKS is it to
you if you be KIND to those whom you love and who love you?” Everyone does
that! Then it goes on and asks “What THANKS (or reward or benefit) is it
for you to DO GOOD to those whom you love--FOR EVERYONE DOES THAT.” He then
tells His disciples that they are to love their enemies! Do good to them! Lend
to them!
One of our
sons has a paper delivery business. He works for a big newspaper in the
Washington D.C. area. Often when his delivery people have a car
breakdown, he lets them use one of his cars. Many times he gives the person a
car or “lends” a car, never to see it again. Our son is not a rich man.
It upsets those who love him that he is so generous--to his own financial
peril. Anyhow that is the way it seems to us. Perhaps, he’s the only one in
the family that is actually practicing Jesus’ words here in Luke, chapter 6.
Perhaps he is the only one who is actually manifesting “thanksgiving” the
Bible-way.
Jesus
declared that His disciples were to do all this and not expect any reward or
appreciation in return. I understand that. You and I do this all
the time--especially those who are parents and those who are pastors and
pastors’ wives. Jesus said to His followers that this would prove that his
men were children of the HIGHEST! (I suppose this means that the GIVERS have
God as their Heavenly Father.)
Why will
that behavior show others that they were God’s children? Jesus said
that people will see them act in that most unusual way, and those observing
would know, by the disciples’ actions, that they were just like their
“FATHER.” So it is only natural to ask, “In what way would they be like their
‘FATHER’?” Jesus reminded them that The HIGHEST is KIND to the unthankful
and to the evil. DARE WE APPLY THIS SCRIPTURE TO OUR LIVES as Jesus did to
His disciples years ago?
My Morning Prayer
by
Gertrude Sanborn
Dear Lord,
I raise my heart in praise
As morning gives its early rays
And THANK THEE for a fresh new day
To live for Thee and walk Thy way.
Dear Lord,
I magnify Thy name,
For Thou art ever more the same;
and THANK THEE for Thy Word so true
With every promise proven thru.
Dear Lord,
I THANK THEE for my morning meal
And for the strength and health I feel;
I THANK THEE, too, for home and mate,
Protective care and my estate.
Dear Lord,
What grace that such as I
May speak my heart to One so High,
And tell in word of human phrase
MY HEART’S OWN THANKS AND DEEPEST PRAISE.

WITH TEARS IN MY HEART, p. 173)

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING?
Now
to the “BIBLE FOR TODAY” NEWS. Let’s see--what have we been dong since last I
wrote. I suppose the question should be, “What have we NOT been
doing?” I better get my calendar out because for the life of me, I can’t
seem to remember. Besides doctor’s and dental appointments, September &
October were filled with my husband’s preaching here at
THE BIBLE FOR TODAY BAPTIST CHURCH.
He just finished PHILEMON and is now in I THESSALONIANS. You can order
these sermons on DVD or audio cassette. Call the office--856-854-4452 for
information or order on the order line: 1-800-JOHN 10:9. Do not use that
number for visiting & chatting.
DO YOU EVER
CLICK ON OUR WEB SITE AND HEAR OR SEE DR. WAITE THERE? (www.BibleForToday.org).
My husband receives hundreds of E-mails, and answers them all the time, plus
the phone calls. He is making progress on the Sproul book. He’s so busy.
He’s been working on his NOVEMBER 28-29 MESSAGES to a SPANISH BAPTIST PASTORS’
FELLOWSHIP CONFERENCE in MATAMOROS, MEXICO, where Dr. Humberto Gomez is in
charge. It’s going to be about Gnoticism’s influence on Bible translations.
All languages have this problem, you know. Dr. Gomez is the man who has
produced the new Spanish translation of the Bible which is faithful to the KJB
and its underlying Words. (BFT #3257 @ $20+ S&H--hardback; or
$40+S&H--genuine leather). Call Dr. Gomez for conference information at
956-867-1281.
Dr. Waite
plans to be preaching all day, Lord willing, at CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH in GORDO,
ALABAMA, on November 11th. Call PASTOR MIKE TRULL at 205-799-2291
for directions. I plan, Lord willing, to be with him in both places. How I’ll
need the grace and strength of God!
We had
overnight visitors three weekends in a row. One was a woman from
Erie, Pa. We enjoy Julie. She’s volunteered to help us with updating
our Bible For Today catalog. Other visitors-- Missionaries David and Pam
Bennett from Australia, were here. Maybe you saw his sermon on the Internet
preaching at our church service. You can order it from us, too. And last but
not least--our daughter and granddaughter from Florida visited us. It
was good! Went to the Jersey Shore heading for Cape May, took a wrong turn and
ended up in Atlantic City. Walked the board walk and ate at an outside cafe.
Fun!
I spoke at a WOMEN’S SEMINAR
in Dover, Delaware on THE SECRET TO A HAPPY HOME (BFT #3342TP @ $4.00 or
#3342CD $5.00 + $1.00 S&H). It was well-received. I summed up
the “secret” in two dogmas: (1) Don’t argue every point and (2) Don’t sexually
defraud your mate. That was at CAPITOL BAPTIST CHURCH where Terri Moore is
the pastor. He was in my husband’s first KING JAMES BIBLE SEMINAR in 1997!
That speech is also in a 22-page-format. Had a book table. It’s the first
time I ever had my own book table.
After reading GERTRUDE
SANBORN’S poems from WITH TEARS IN MY HEART to the women, (BFT #3196 at a
special gift offer of $15.00 + $5.00 S&H), her book sold well. Once you read
mother’s poems, you want the book! Also a few days later we gave
a PORTRAYAL OF FRANCES HAVERGAL in South Jersey. Saw some old
friends there. Also, I recorded radio programs on the WICCAN, HARRY POTTER, &
HALLOWEEN for broadcasting in October and November (JFW #/101 on CD @ $5.00 +
$1.00 S&H or Audio Cassette @ $4.00 +$1.00 S&H.)
AN
UNTRUE RUMOR
A terrible,
untrue rumor has been going around for a few years. It is NOT TRUE that Dr.
Waite wants to change the KING JAMES BIBLE! It is absolutely untrue.
My husband does not see any reason to “update” the King James Bible. Where
did this rumor start? Well, I don’t know for sure, but I think I have a
sneaking suspicion. If you recall, our oldest son, D. A. Waite, Jr., was
working for the Bible For Today for a brief period until our funds ran
out. While he worked for us , he did a magnificent job defining the difficult
words in the KJB. His work make it possible for the BFT to publish
THE DEFINED KING JAMES BIBLE
(BFT #3000 hardback and genuine leather at various prices). YOU PROBABLY
HAVE ONE. We are in the ninth printing of that Bible. There are over 57,000
in print today and distributed around the world. It is a wonderful Bible! It
is an excellent Bible to explain many old English words that some people could
have trouble with today. (If children began reading the KJB as they learned to
read in their early years, there would be no trouble understanding its words.
If anyone has trouble understanding the KJB, it is because that person is not as
well educated as my Grandmother who, with a sixth grade education, could read it
fluently.)
Well, after
that, a man who has, what is called, THE EASY READING BIBLE, hired our skilled
son to help him with a word-revision of this Bible. So D. A. Waite ,
JR. did this work. That is
what it was--“work”-- a job! At the time, he was teaching school and needed a
summer employment. Doing this work was his summer job. Another summer, our
oldest son worked on the book, WITH TEARS IN MY HEART, doing a superb job
of formatting and proofing. Now he is not teaching anymore. He has a
day job where he does similar work but it is not in the “Bible translation” or
“Bible printing” field.
Dr.
Waite does not want to change the KJB!
Then
someone, whose name you would know, heard about this and made a meal of it in a
speech before a large group of fundamental King James Bible pastors & people.
From that contact, the rumor that Dr. D. A. Waite,
SR. wanted to change the
King James Bible found root and did much damage. HOW UNTRUE. Never fear! My
husband stands strong for the King James Bible and its underlying Words. It is
the only Bible that he uses and the only Bible that he recommends or will ever
recommend.
DR.
WAITE’S RADIO MINISTRY
A LITERAL,
VERBAL TRANSLATION OF ORIGINAL WORDS
Let me review with you my
husband’s radio ministry. He has three
radio programs--two of them are in defense of TRADITIONAL TEXTS. As
you know, the King James Bible is a translation that comes from the traditional
texts which are the MASORETIC HEBREW TEXT for the Old Testament and the TEXTUS
RECEPTUS GREEK TEXT for the New Testament. Many people do not realize that one
of the major flaws in the many new Bible translations is the TEXT which underlie
the translation. Another reason is the METHOD of translations. The King
James Bible is a plenary, verbal, translation, while translations like the New
International Version employ the method of dynamic equivalence.
EDUCATE YOURSELF
If you do not have my husband’s
basic book, DEFENDING THE KING JAMES BIBLE, you should get it today.
Ask for BFT#1594-P @$12.00 + $4.00 S&H. Get it and educate yourself so you
can be “up” on this Bible translation issue. DEFENDING has been
in print for about fourteen years and has helped hundreds of people. In fact,
many of the men who are writing books on the subject today have learned much of
the translation controversy answers from Dr. Waite and his book. Of course,
they might not admit it publicly--but it is true. In fact, some of them quote
him without mentioning his name.
BIBLE TRANSLATIONS ARE NOT INSPIRED
--Only Original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek
Words--
I could name
several leaders in the field who have said that DEFENDING THE KING JAMES
BIBLE is the best book on the subject and that they would always carry it in
their ministry and offer it to their people. Then all of a sudden they realize that
my husband does not think that the KJB is inspired of God or God-breathed (which
is what this means); and they drop the book like a hot potato. LET ME EXPLAIN
BIBLE
TRANSLATIONS ARE NOT INSPIRED--not even the King James Bible. It is the best! It is the most accurate!
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE KING JAMES BIBLE IS NOT THE BEST BIBLE IN THE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE. IT IS! But Holy men of old did not receive the Words of the
King James Bible from God the Holy Spirit. The original Hebrew, Aramaic and
Greek Words were from the breath of God. Those were the Words that God gave to
Moses, Jeremiah, Daniel, Peter, Paul, Mark, Luke, John the beloved, and the
other Bible writers.
You and I do not have the
original Manuscripts today--or at least they have not been found. But we do have plenary, verbal,
preserved copies of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek Words. We have the
preserved Greek New Testament Words, for example, in BFT #471 @ $14.00 +
$5.00 S&H. We have copies of the original “inspired” Words. Those
copies are not in English or Spanish or any exotic language. If those original
language copies are accurately translated, as they were in our King James Bible,
you and I have the Words of God in English, our mother tongue. That’s what we
have in the King James Bible for the English-speaking world. It is a wonderful
treasure! IT IS WITHOUT TRANSLATIONAL ERROR. I hope this is plain to you.
I remember
as a young child singing a song--I believe my mother taught it to me. It goes
like this:
“I have a wonderful treasure. The gift of God without measure.
And we travel together. My Bible and I.”
(Harry Dixon Loes wrote those
words. I think he was one of my teachers when I was at Moody Bible Institute
back in the stone age.)
CLARIFICATION CONCERNING
COUNTING BIBLE WORDS
I would
like to clarify something right now concerning a recent book that has come out
saying it is “refuting” Dr. Waite and his count as to how many differences there
are between today’s King James Bible and the 1611 KJB. It bothers
me very much when I read reviews of books where my husband’s name is taken in
vain. So, I’ve asked Dr. Waite to answer this charge in his own words so that
it will be clear and accurate. Here’s what he has to say on the subject:
Information
on Rick Norris’ booklet
“TODAY’S
KJV AND 1611 COMPARED AND MORE”
by Pastor D.
A. Waite, Sr., Th.D., Ph.D.
In March,
1985, I published a paper entitled “THE KING JAMES VERSION OF 1611 COMPARED
TO THE KING JAMES VERSION OF THE 1917 OLD SCOFIELD BIBLE” (BFT#1294 @ $2.00
+$1.50 S&H). In 2006, 21 years later, Rick Norris came out with his
booklet mentioned above.
Here are
some of the things I mentioned in my paper as to the method that I used. I
listened to my own reading of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation on
cassette tapes. For this Bible reading, I used the 1917
Old Scofield King James Bible. As I listened to the 1917 KJB, my
eyes followed the Nelson Publishers’ 1611 King James Bible. When I
heard differences, I noted them.
(1) I was not looking for spelling changes which number in
the tens of thousands. (p.3)
(2) I was looking only for changes I could hear
with my ears. (p. 3)
I mentioned
that “It goes without saying that I might have missed a place or two
throughout the course of the Bible, but I tried to record them all as much as is
humanly possible.” (p.4)
The purpose of my study was to
show that when the New King James Version (NKJV) editors believed that “the
King James Bible should once more be sensitively revised. . .” (p. 2). THE IMPLICATION IS THAT THE
NKJV WAS “JUST ONE MORE REVISION.” Yet the NKJV made upwards of
100,000 changes in the English words. I wished to show that the changes
from the 1611 to the 1769 KJB were MINOR compared with the MAJOR
numbers of changes in the NKJV.
My EARS
found only a total of 421 changes from Genesis through Revelation. Only
136 of these were what I called “substantial” changes The remaining 276
changes were minor like “towards” changed to “toward”; “burnt” changed to
“burned”; “amongst” changed to “among”; “lift” changed to “lifted”; and “you”
changed to “ye.” (p. 5) These were basically the same words, but I counted
them in the 421 changes.
Rick Norris,
on the other hand, used a different method in his study. HE DID NOT
RELY UPON HIS EARS, BUT USED HIS EYES TO COMPARE THE 1611 KJB WITH THE
1769 KJB. He found 2,024 changes by using the method of the eyes rather
than the ears. It took him 21 years to come up with these. I compared
each of the 2,024 changes tabulated by Rick Norris. In my opinion, I
found that only 1,095 of his changes to the ear were valid changes within his
stated purpose.
Whichever
total you might take, either the 2,024 or 1,095, THESE ARE BOTH A VERY MINOR
NUMBER OF CHANGES when you understand that the King James Bible has
791,328 words in all. The 2,024 figure would be only about
0.26% changes which would be minor compared with the NKJV. The
1,095 figure would be only about 0.14% changes which would be even
more minor. Compared with the NKJV, if there are 100,000 changes
(and there are probably many more), this would be about 12.6% changes
which would show that the NKJV was a far different kind of a revision
than that of the 1769 Old King James Bible which we now have. The NKJV
is not “just one more revision” of the KJB. It is a new translation.
DEFENDING THE KJB ON RADIO
For ONE
THOUSAND, FORTY-EIGHT Weeks
Right now,
Dr. Waite has been reading and explaining DEFENDING THE KING JAMES BIBLE
on his thirty-minute radio programs. It has been some time since he
has done that and thought it would be beneficial to his hearers. If it hasn’t
helped his listeners, it has helped him to re-read his work. How much more he
has learned on the subject since he first wrote it years ago! That is the way
with life--we keep learning and growing and, hopefully, improving.
ORDER THE DR. WAITE’S RADIO
TAPES
Did you know
that you can order these radio tapes from us? Ask for DEFENDING THE KING JAMES
BIBLE--RADIO EDITION (BFT #259/1-4 @ $12.00 + $4.00 S&H. Other tapes will be
added monthly @ $4 each). Of course, this series on DEFENDING THE
KING JAMES BIBLE is like a piece of string, it goes on and on; but you can cut
it anyplace and enjoy what you hear. These are only on cassette tapes. We will
not be putting this series on CD’s because of the many CD’s that it would take
and because of the lack of personnel and funds to transform the tapes to CD’s.
This is a vital series!!
"WALK IN WISDOM TOWARD THEM THAT ARE
WITHOUT, REDEEMING THE TIME."
As I close this letter to you, I am weary. My mind is jumping
to California and those awful fires. Thousands of acres burned. Homes are
ravished! People are emptied of all possessions! I can’t help but remember
that it was only a few days ago that GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER SIGNED A BILL THAT
FORBIDS SCHOOLS FROM TEACHING ANYTHING CONTRARY TO HOMOSEXUALS, BISEXUALS, OR
TRANSVESTITES, AND OTHER PERVERSIONS. Is God firing judgment on California’s
shores? He did so with Sodom and Gomorrah! Remember? I hope that the
California governor listens to God’s still small voice. He will speak after
the fire, the wind, and the ravages cease!
