PRAYER AND PLAY BACK IN THE PARK

"Get the children ready and pack your picnic rug for a fun day out at Church in the Park this Sunday.

Dubbo Presbyterian Church is holding the event again this year after its outstanding success in 2002.

The event is designed to be a friendly and non-threatening way for adults, children and young people to explore the principles of the church and have a bit of fun at the same time.

The event is a mix of entertainment and reflection on the bible with singing, drama skits, band performances and heaps for the kids."

Pastor Smith said "We want people to enjoy themselves and introduce the ways people can find relevance in Jesus without the traditional church environment."

"The event is part of the Presbyterian Church's Open Week starting on Sunday December 12 and culminating with another Church in the Park on Sunday December 19."

Then there is "The 'Wine, Cheese, the Universe and Me' night at Red Earth Winery" which "encourages young, old, male and female to experience good food and wine the with the wonder of the skies - offering understanding of how you fit into the big picture with Jesus."

WHEN PRIVACY HASN'T GOT A PRAYER

"In the latest display of political correctness, the Privacy Act which came into force on December 21, 2002, now restricts weekly church bulletins from naming people on their lists.

Unless the church has the individual's specific permission to publish their name, it cannot be included on a prayer list.

Religious ministers also are finding it increasingly difficult to visit patients in hospitals because of privacy legislation restrictions.

The Privacy Commission Office alerted churches to the new requirements last May.

Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese Bishop Michael Malone said privacy legislation was ‘becoming a bit cumbersome’.

‘Whereas before [the church] could get lists of [Catholic] patients from the hospital in order for a minister to visit them, now the hospital cannot release that information. Now the patient has to have already signed a permission form.’"

Episcopal News Service (ENS Hereafter) 8January 2003 - SCHOOLS HELP IMPART RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE, BRITISH SURVEY FINDS

"When researchers at Exeter University surveyed more than 500 youngsters about their religious knowledge, they received some surprising but also reassuring answers. More than half (54 percent) did not know that Easter celebrates the resurrection of

Jesus but three-quarters of them (77 percent) knew that, according to the gospels, he was raised from the dead.

The survey…found that 44 percent of the children could name a specific biblical parable, with the story

of the Good Samaritan by far the best known. Just over half were able to cite one of the Bible's miracle stories."

Schools in Britain are required to teach religion. However, from the survey it was discovered that

"Jesus, however, often comes across as just a good

man in a secular, 21st-century sense."

Some schools in Britain do not give the lord Jesus any prominence. In fact "One school in Brighton has banned the use of the terms BC, ‘before Christ,’ or

AD, ‘anno domini’ or ‘year of the Lord.’

A Brighton school official said "It is not the job of the school to lead a pupil towards a particular faith. We teach about religion, not just one religion."

ENS 9 January 2003 TUTU JOINS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA FACULTY

(South Florida Sun-Sentinel) "I've been here before and was thrilled by my engagement with the students. And there was a young South African on the faculty

who twisted my arm a little bit,’ said Tutu, now retired, who will be paid $76,000 for his work."

ENS 9 January 2003 AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR TAKES ON "SUICIDAL CHURCH" (The Age) "Is the Anglican church in Melbourne committing suicide? Art historian Dr. Caroline Miley thinks so--and the Archbishop of Melbourne, Peter Watson, is inclined to agree."

Miley authored the book "The Suicidal Church: Can the Anglican Church be Saved?"

Watson says the "church is timid, institutionalized, racist, sexist, homophobic, and impedes the

message of the Gospel." and therefore is recommending the book for the church leaders to read.

SMH 4 January 2003 BRITISH FLOCK MAY DEFECT TO WILD COLONIAL CLERIC

"Influential opponents of the new Archbishop of Canterbury and his ‘heretical’ views on homosexuality are developing plans to bring up to 150 English parishes under the spiritual leadership of the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen."

The Reform and Church Society are the two conservative evangelical groups considering such an "alternative episcopal oversight" and plan to discuss such with Dr. Jensen when he visits Britain later this month.

The two groups "say they have been driven to consider such an unorthodox option - pioneered by conservative churches in America three years ago - because of the appointment of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury, the nominal head of the world's 70 million Anglicans."

The new Archbishop of Canterbury is a "confessed ‘hairy leftie’ and a leading religious academic, has angered traditionalists by admitting he has ordained a practising gay man and by publicly backing homosexuals in the church."

"The parishes would remain part of the global Anglican communion but be set free of the growing influence of the church's liberal wing.

Senior Church Society figures say that at a meeting to discuss the group's concerns late last year, Dr Williams went as far to suggest the scriptures supported stable same-sex relationships, though he has recently ruled out moves to introduce gay priests."

Williams was not available for comment but a spokesperson said Williams was "committed to the unity of the Anglican communion" and any break would be viewed with concern.

SMH 3 January 2003 NEWEST BISHOP PREFERS SAVING SOULS TO SAVING BODIES

Sydney’s Anglican Archbishop has appointed "Ivan Yin Lee as the new Bishop of Western Sydney. With his patch stretching from Parramatta to Lithgow, an area with about 1 million inhabitants, Bishop Lee, 46, is now looking at saving 10,000 sinners a year to fulfill the church's mission statement of converting 10 per cent of the population into ‘Bible-believing’ Christians within the next 10 years."

Lee’s parents migrated "to Australia in the 1950s from Guangzhou province, China." "He describes his childhood spirituality as ‘part cultural Buddhism, part assumed atheism’.

He said he "converted to Christianity at a church-run camp in his teens, and went on to horrify his parents by announcing, after two years into a medical degree at the University of NSW, that he was taking a year off to study theology at Moore College." That year turned into four and he "emerged an ordained minister."

"Despite his time in the considerably more liberal diocese of Melbourne, Bishop Lee's stance on the role of women in the church remains distinctly Sydney. Women do not preach at St Aidan's."

Editor’s Comment: If the Anglican Church is not a mixed multitude I don’t know what is. Nehemiah 13:3 "Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude."

SMH 4 January 2003 FOR SAME SEX COUPLES, SYDNEY HAS IT OVER MELBOURNE

"Sydney remains Australia's gay capital but the ACT is following closely behind.

As for Melbourne, it's not as gay and bohemian as a national study last year claimed. And the Census proves it.

In a report, published in Monash University's People and Places journal, Bob Birrell says data released last year was misinterpreted and figures inflated.

Last year's study by National Economics, based on the 2001 Census, suggested Melbourne had a higher proportion of same-sex couples than Sydney and even San Francisco."

Birrell said this was wrong "So essentially we re-did the study using the same information." and "The results painted a different picture, finding the percentage of persons in same sex couples (as per cent of all people in couples) in Sydney was 0.81, in the ACT it was 0.76 and Melbourne 0.57."

The good ole USA is still the leader in same-sex couples and according to Birrell "San Francisco is clearly still the gay capital and in fact in some parts of it almost a third of the population are gay."
