Anglican Communion News Service (ACNS Hereafter) SCOTLAND - 20 MARCH 2003-

CHURCHES URGED TO STRENGTHEN MUSLIM TIES AFTER ATTACK (Edited by DCB) "[The Scottish Episcopal Church] Churches across Scotland were today urged to strengthen their ties with Muslim communities in their towns and cities following the start of hostilities against Iraq."

Seven bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church wrote to more 500 ministers and other church leaders asking them to extend "to our Muslim brothers and sisters our commitment to friendship and mutual respect."

This action followed "a series of meetings between the country's religious leaders over the past year. Religious leaders from all traditions have worked hard to build better relations to ease tensions that arose in some communities following the September 11 attacks."

Bruce Cameron, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, said "The ultimate goal is not the determination of Saddam Hussein's future or the destruction of the weapons that Iraq may or may not have. It is securing sustainable peace and justice for the people of the Middle East."

Editor’s Comment: 1Th 5:3 "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape."

ACNS – USA - 20 MARCH 2003 - THE GIFT OF SEXUALITY: A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE:

REPORT OF THE THEOLOGY COMMITTEE OF THE HOUSE OF BISHOPS OF THE EPISCOPAL

CHURCH- (Edited by DCB) "Preface

[1.0] The House of Bishops, meeting in the 73rd General Convention of the Episcopal Church, resolved to continue to study and be in conversation about

issues of human sexuality.

[1.1] The following paper is the product of an eighteen- month study undertaken by the Theology Committee."

One of the "more challenging areas of human sexuality in our Church is homosexuality. A certain percentage of human beings experience and

understand themselves to be homosexually oriented. Homosexual persons are increasingly visible in our society, our churches, and our communities,

bringing particular challenges and gifts to Christian ethical and theological understanding."

"The Christian community, from generation to generation, must address the new spiritual and moral concerns that emerge in the experience and understanding of God's people."

The Anglican Church is struggling with two questions: "(1) Is it ever appropriate to pronounce the Church's blessing on same- gender relationships as we do on heterosexual marriages and, if so, under what conditions? (2) Is it ever appropriate to ordain non-celibate homosexual persons, and thereby commend them as ‘wholesome examples’ to the Church and society, and, if so, under what conditions?"

"The Church vigorously denounces discrimination and

violence based on sexual orientation, and we call upon all members of our society, and especially members of the body of Christ, to honour their baptismal vow to respect the full humanity and dignity of every human being (BCP 305)."

Many in the Anglican Church are "asking, with attendant pastoral concern, whether some forms of homosexual activity might be open to God's blessing in ways the Church has not previously recognized."

"Does the Church remain persuaded that all expressions of homosexual intimacy are sinful, or are

there conditions under which we might be able to recognize that intimacy as a source of God's blessing, just as is true in some, though not all, expressions of heterosexual intimacy?"

Another question being asked is "is it thus appropriate for the Church to ordain as ‘wholesome examples’ certain non- celibate homosexual persons?"

Editor’s Comment: Leviticus 20:13 "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination..." Sadly, the final authority for the Anglican Church is not the Word of God so they continue to look for answers they desire.

ACNS 19 March, 2003- 'TREE HUGGER' NAMED AS WINNER OF MILLION-DOLLAR RELIGION PRIZE – (Edited by DCB) "Holmes Rolston III, an environmentalist and ordained Presbyterian minister, has been named winner of this year's Templeton Prize, one of the world's most prestigious awards in

the field of religion--and worth over $1 million, making it the world's largest monetary award given to an individual."

Rolston teaches philosophy (what else) at Colorado State University and describes himself as a ‘tree-hugger’.

He "has been a leader in the burgeoning field of environmental ethics."

Supposedly Roston is different than others in that "human beings are not at the center of his studies." His argument is "that ecosystems--systems of plants and animals as well as human beings--should be at the heart of theological and scientific inquiry."

Roston said he "had to fight both theology and science to love nature."

Editor’s Comment: Job 7:17 "What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?" Ps 8:4 "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"

ACNS 19 March, 2003 - PRIME MINISTER BLAIR RECEIVES COMMUNION FROM POPE JOHN PAUL II AT THE VATICAN (Edited by DCB)

"(Church Times) Prime Minister Tony Blair of Great Britain, an Anglican, received communion from Pope John Paul II during a recent visit to the Vatican and attended mass with his wife and three eldest children, all of whom are Roman Catholics."

It is said the "that the Vatican Secretariat of State granted a special dispensation to Blair on the grounds that there is no Anglican church for him to attend in the Vatican, although there are three Anglican places of worship in Rome itself."

Martin Reardon of the Association of Interchurch Families said "We're delighted," for "It is progress. We would hope that the guidelines will develop to meet the pastoral needs of interchurch families."

Editor’s Comment: Revelation 19:2 "For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand."

ACNS 19 March 03 EUROPEAN POLITICIANS IN UNHOLY ROW OVER GOD'S PLACE IN

CONSTITUTION (Edited by DCB) "Calls for placing a reference to God in the text of a new European Union constitution have provoked lively debate, with

some drafters urging that the draft mention faith in God as a source of truth and justice. Others are baffled by the suggestion."

"Former French president, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, who chairs the convention, has questioned the mention of God." He said "Europeans live in a purely secular political system, where religion does not play an important role."

Editor’s Comment: Revelation 17:16 "And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire."

ACNS 19 March 03 CARIBBEAN CONFERENCE EXPLORES MISSION ISSUES IN A NEW

CENTURY (Edited by DCB) "(Codrington College) An ecumenical conference on the theme of

‘Christian Mission in the 21st Century Caribbean’ was held in Barbados in response to a statement from the House of Bishops of the Province of the West Indies that called on dioceses to emphasize mission as the key to development."

Papers and discussions at the conference "highlighted a number of issues unique to the region, including a proper understanding and use of power; the future of the ecumenical movement; how the churches should

deal with Rastafarianism; attitudes toward women and the use of masculine language and imagery; the emphasis on mission in theological education; and how to reach out in mission both at home and abroad."

Editor’s Comment: Pr 4:19 "The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble."

ACNS 19 March 03 KENYAN CHURCH MEMBERS WARNED AGAINST CHARMING PYTHON (Edited by DCB) "Church leaders in Kenya are warning their members not to put their faith in a 16-foot python that has attracted hundreds of visitors who believe that the snake possesses supernatural

powers."

The snake is credited "with playing a role

in the country's elections last December when former president Daniel arap Moi surrendered power after ruling for 40 years."

Anglican and Roman Catholic leaders are saying the snake should be removed to a park but Professor Gilbert Ogutu of the University of Nairobi says the snakes "presence does not prevent anybody

from adhering to their faith. In fact, it may symbolize that God has visited his people."

Editor’s Comment: Eph 2:12 "...having no hope, and without God in the world."

ACNS 19 March 03 RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE HIGHLIGHTED BY WCC AT HUMAN RIGHTS MEETING (Edited by DCB) "Increasing religious intolerance in India, Indonesia and Pakistan is being highlighted by the World Council of Churches

at a meeting of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR). The denial of economic and cultural rights to the people of West Papua, as well as human rights violations committed under the Israeli military occupation of Palestine will also be addressed by the WCC."

Editor’s Comment: Job 8:13 "So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish."

ACNS 22 MARCH 03 ENGLAND - MUSLIMS JOIN CHRISTIANS IN CATHEDRAL FOR HISTORIC PRAYERS OF PEACE (Edited by DCB)

"[Diocese of Ripon and Leeds] In an unprecedented act of interfaith witness and cooperation, Muslims from Leeds and North Yorkshire have joined with

Christians in prayers for peace at Ripon Cathedral..." "History was made when a delegation of thirty-five members of the Leeds Muslim Forum and the Scarborough Islamic Society laid down prayer mats and performed midday prayers in the south aisle of the Cathedral, before moving to a Shrine for Justice and Peace where they joined with the Dean of Riponand other Christians in prayers for peace. Afterwards members of the Muslim delegation lit candles at the shrine."

"The Shrine of Justice and Peace was inaugurated in Ripon Cathedral's Chapel of God the Creator last month. It includes a low 'table' of slates in which

pieces of paper containing prayers can be placed, together with candles and a floral display."

Editor’s Comment: Ex 23:32 "Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods." 1Ki 18:21 "...How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him...."
