Standing unashamedly for the King James Bible  At the Cross Walk Church web site is a page of frequently asked questions. One of the questions and the answer is;

What version of the Bible do you use?

Currently, we are using the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible in our teaching and preaching. We believe that we have an obligation to use the most accurate version available today, which provides at the same time a very readable translation and the ESV gives us this. Many of the members, as well as those who regularly attend Cross Walk use the NIV, NASB or other reliable translations for their private Bible reading and study. We believe we have liberty, as to which English Bible to use for reading and study, since the Bible was preserved from error in it original manuscripts. However, since these manuscripts no longer exist, we must rely on the huge quantity of manuscripts and partial manuscripts now available through archeological discovery, to guide translators to an extremely accurate modern English version of the Bible. Note the words reliable and huge quantity of manuscripts. Interestingly the versions listed are all translations of the critical text which has the less manuscript evidence. Also note the word currently as to what translation they use. In other words the translation they use may change again!  A church in Sydney, Australia which began under the leadership of missionaries with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE) tells visitors that If you need a Bible, help yourself to one from the table.  We use the New King James Version or the English Standard Version in our services.

Commentary: What do the above churches have in common? The first common denominator is their use of English translations other than the King James Bible. The second common characteristic these churches have is their present or past affiliation with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC). The ABWE was for many years an approved mission with the GARBC until the GARBC ceased approving mission agencies and schools in 2000.  The third common characteristic of these churches is that most pastors in GARBC affiliated churches and organizations attended once approved GARBC schools. For instance the Australian ABWE missionary is affiliated with Cornerstone University (once Grand Rapids Baptists College) .   Grand Rapids was known for years to be in the more liberal Baptist camp but when it dropped the name Baptist in its name change all suspicions were realized as being true.

This is not to disparage the character of these men but the point is that many of these Baptist institutions such as BBC of Pennsylvania and Cornerstone University are turning out men who (1) do not seemingly understand the true meaning and godly heritage of the Baptists and (2) do not understand the real issue behind the English (or any other language) translation of the Bible and their underlying texts.

Then there are the mission agencies such as ABWE which further the teaching of these schools, BBC and Cornerstone University, through distance education and church planting  such as BBC Seminarys Project Jerusalem; .

Even though the GARBC never took a position in its inception on the King James Bible, the majority, if not all, of its churches in the early years used the King James Bible. Now after many years of existence numerous GARBC churches have not only dropped the name Baptist but with that have adopted one of the new versions. This infection is not felt only within the GARBC but most Baptist fellowships and this disease has been spread mainly via the institutions of higher learning and then propagated by the mission agencies.

Unfortunately there is not much hope for these fellowships but there is for the individual church.  To God be the glory.

Because of Calvary,

David C. Bennett, D. Min.
