November 2008

Dear Friends in Christ Jesus,

The last Monday of October we attended the funeral of a 56 year old man who died suddenly of a heart attack. He was the father of (Bernie) a young man we have become acquainted with. The funeral was at the local Roman Catholic Church where false assurance was given the family that their loved one was in Heaven because of the man’s “baptism”. There was the usual sprinkling of the casket with “baptismal” water and the leaflet that was distributed read “In Baptism (the man’s name) was enlightened by Christ.” The priest also emphasized this as well. Pray the Lord will open Bernie’s heart as we take further opportunity to witness to him.

2Timothy 3:1-5 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

A lot has taken place in the world since our last letter. We may live many thousands of miles from where you live but the same things are occurring here. The stock market has plunged to new lows, house prices have dropped, loans are becoming harder to obtain, unemployment is on the rise, the government is dispensing money to “stimulate” the economy, binge drinking is becoming more of a problem, and generally sin seems to continue unabated. Why is this happening?  The reason of course is found in the Scriptures. The verse quoted above tells us the reason for all that has happened, such as this so-called global crisis, in verses 1- 9. However, for the believer the summation of the whole matter is stated in the last few verses and relates as to what we believe concerning the Scriptures, verses 15 – 17. Are they, the Scriptures, still sufficient to bring young people and adults to Christ, verse 15? Are they, the Scriptures, the very Words of God, verse 16? Are they, the Scriptures profitable for man’s every need, verse 16? Are they, the Scriptures, capable of helping the believer to live uprightly in this “crooked and perverse” world, verse 17? Our answer should be in the positive to each question, but is it?

We have not yet seen much visible fruit for our labour here in Dubbo other than Jim and Margaret who followed the Lord in the waters of baptism several years ago now but we know it is “God that giveth the increase” 1Corinthians 3:7. However, it seems from the prayer letters we receive from several Australian independent Baptist missionaries serving overseas that God is working and souls are being saved and churches planted. We rejoice with them for it has been our privilege as a fellowship to be a part of some of these souls coming to Christ through our prayers and giving.  Pray with us that we may also see souls saved and be able to do more for the missionaries financially next year!

The field is wherever the Lord puts us and until the Lord directs us elsewhere we plan to continue to preach and plant the seed here.  Please continue to pray for the unsaved God has brought into our lives, Bernie, Bob and Elizabeth, Ian, Lorraine, Mark and Tracy, and Kenneth. Kenneth is a medical practitioner originally from Nigeria who recently moved to Gilgandra. He visited the Gil fellowship in October and we trust he will again. We were able to present the gospel to Kenneth and followed up with a letter and Gospel tract. One never knows what the spiritual result will be. We remember reading some time ago about an Australian Christian man in the 1950’s who made it a habit to speak to ten people each day asking the question “if you were to die tonight, where would you be, in heaven or in hell?” He continued this habit for 16 years before he received word that several had come to Christ and were continuing on for Him because of his asking them that question.  Upon hearing this it is said he fell to his knees and prayed “O Lord, thank you for tolerating me.” May the Lord continue to “tolerate” us and someday may we see the fruit of our labour with souls saved, baptized and a church established in Dubbo for His glory.  Also before we close remember to pray for the Ogden’s as they have begun building their new house and will probably be leaving the fellowship sometime in the first part of next year.  Again thank you for your prayers and financial support.

Because of Grace and Calvary,

David and Pam Bennett

(PS- Pam’s brother’s wife who has cancer, may not make it past Christmas. She and Danny have both professed Christ. Thank you for your prayers for them.)
