A STORM IS NO RESPECTER OF PERSONS

Here I sit at my computer thinking of you and wondering how you are. Are you well, strong, and full of praise for God's grace in your life; or, are you full of cares and despair, and forget Him? We human beings--even born-again Christians--sometime fall into such a bog of bitterness, sad to say. I'm no different. Admit it! You are the same. I suppose my mind went to such thoughts, because the sight from my window is one of doom & darkness. It's morning--early-- dark--about seven-thirty. The world is raining. The sun is hidden. The wind is blowing. We are the recipients of Hurricane Ernesto's tears. He's weeping, for he is only a "tropical rainstorm" now. The whole East Coast has been touched by his wind. Somewhere, trees have fallen upon roofs of houses and cars. Flood-waters have swept homes, saturated cars, frightened children, scattered animals--destroying all in their path. Some have fled to shelters, others to relatives, while many climb the stairs of their water-filled dwellings for relief. One of our sons from Maryland called on his cell phone this morning. He's been out of electricity for a day. Our across-the-street neighbor's house-improvement is progressing. Not only have they built a new room on the back and torn down the old garage, they have new off-white/gray siding. Another neighbor has put a basketball contraption on the former grass between our driveways. Not sure why. The neighbors on the kitchen side of us never swim in their swimming pool. Must admit there is much activity there this morning. The rain is peppering the pool-water with merry excitement. As far as the Lutheran church across the street goes, they still have a woman pastor.

DR. WAITE ANSWERS A CRITICAL TEXT MAN

RECENTLY DR. WAITE RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM A FRIEND WHO HAD A CORRESPONDENCE WITH A MAN WHO WAS COMING AROUND TO THE TEXTUS RECEPTUS POSITION. He wrote to his Greek teacher at a neo-evangelical school. I thought you would be interested in that correspondence. His professor responded to his inquiry regarding the KJV in this manner: It is true that all modern translations are based on early manuscripts from the A.D. 100-400 period. This was also true for the Westcott/Hort text, but no one today follows them in all their textual decisions. The KJV is based on the Greek text as it had evolved in the medieval period. Numerically there are more manuscripts from the medieval period than from the early period. But this says nothing about the quality of the manuscripts. The medieval manuscripts share a wide range of very obvious corruptions, and these have found their way into the KJV. 99.9% of modern New Testament scholars believe in the principle of basing our text on manuscripts from the early period rather than the medieval period. This is true for evangelical, moderate, and liberal scholars. Among them there are some who are Darwinians and have a problematic view of Jesus. However this is irrelevant to the question of determining the best manuscript evidence on which to base the text of the New Testament. Incidentally Westcott and Hort were conservative scholars who had a high view of Jesus and the Scriptures.

HERE IS DR. WAITE'S ASTUTE ANSWER

The professor has been fed a group of lies regarding the Greek New Testament. Though Vatican and Sinai were early, they were strongly corrupted by the Gnostic heretics of Alexandria, Egypt. The MSS underlying our KJB are far superior and escaped those corruptions. He has the wrong group of MSS that are corrupt. But this is what he has been taught.

He is wrong also saying that present Critical Text people do not follow the teachings of Westcott and Hort. They follow practically all of their Introduction to the Greek N.T. of 1881. He is also wrong in saying W & H were "conservative scholars who had a high view of Jesus and the Scriptures." They were apostates who had a low view of both Jesus and the Scriptures. He should read my books: (1) The Theological Heresies of Westcott and Hort (BFT #595 @ $7.00 + $3.00 S&H) and (2) Bishop Westcott's Clever Denial of the Bodily Resurrection of Christ (BFT #1131 @ $4.00 + $1.00 S&H) He should also get (3) The Life and Letters of Westcott (BFT #1866 @ $45.00 + 7.00 S&H), and Life and Letters of Hort (BFT #1867 @ $48.00 + $7.00 S&H) to see how far off these men were on the doctrines of the Lord Jesus Christ and of the Bible.

A WEEK OFF IN NEW YORK STATE

As scheduled, my husband and I drove to Northern New York State to be at the CHRISTIAN LAKE BIBLE CONFERENCE in Stratford. I've told you about this area before. We always enjoy the beauty of the place, the quietness away from the hustle of life on the outside. The trees are very restful to me as they are reflected in the large man-made lake that we view from our cabin windows. We took our yearly ride to Herkemer for groceries. When they ran out, we ate at a restaurant in Dolgeville, a small town, down the long country road and past the sawmill. It was strangely unusually quiet, as there were no campers whatsoever this year. Dr. Waite could spend more time in the cabin with me and any who dropped in for a visit. I read and he worked on his 1 Timothy book. Even though there are only six chapters, it takes time, thought, and energy, as well as prayer to write what is supposed to be on the page. (Have you ordered his other PREACHING VERSE-BY-VERSE books?) I think he worked on chapter five of 1 Timothy while there. It was a disappointment that no one was registered at the camp this year. It was a first for us. I don't know the reason, do you? So, with no one in the camp, the evening meetings were slow, but my husband taught 2 Peter anyhow (BFT #3289/1-3 @ $9.00 + $3.00 S&H). I did not video it. Sure was a different year!

CORRESPONDING WITH A FRIEND

I've been corresponding with a friend of years past since we both found ourselves at Cooper Hospital's emergency room together. This was a few weeks ago--between our Indiana and Minnesota trips--prior to New York. It turned out that she was far more sick than I, which was good for me, but not so good for her. BUT GOD! He has a way of undertaking in the most serious of our distresses. Our beds were next to each other briefly. I could see her life ebbing away from her. So I sang her a song. It spoke of the "peace of God" that passes all understanding . The words and music are by Haldor Lillenas.

"Coming to Jesus, my Saviour, I found wonderful peace, wonderful peace; Storms in their furry may rage all around, I have peace, sweet peace. Peace, peace, wonderful peace, Peace, peace, glorious peace; Since my Redeemer has ransomed my soul, I have peace, sweet peace."

THE LION HATH ROARED, WHO WILL NOT FEAR? AMOS 3:8

For a dozen years or so I've been using I Peter 5:6-11 as my "life" verses. There is so much to think about in that passage. In my last letter to my friend, I began writing about the "devil, our adversary." The Bible says he is as a roaring lion "seeking whom he may devour." I wrote and wrote and wrote. All the thoughts and meditations that have been on my heart for so long came out on paper to her. Fortunately, I was at the computer, or she never would have been able to read my many words. Let me tell you some of the things that I wrote her that day."The devil is our adversary and he is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour." He is NOT a lion but he is like one. If he were an actual animal with a big mane and dangerous eyes walking on four huge paws, we‘d recognize him in a minute. No he is ‘AS' a lion. To put it bluntly that Lion-like-Devil's whole goal is to DESTROY Christians. So how does he do it? He is walking among us Christians. He looks so nice--nothing like a lion. His eyes are observing us. He know whom he wants. He is patient. He is stalking us. He will wait for the right irresistible "temptation" to grab us--that unguarded moment when our caution is down. Maybe he uses someone whom we have trusted to get to us. Maybe he uses an attractive stranger or a close friend--or even an enemy. Maybe he is waiting for a certain weakness to be weaker. It could be sexual, it could be financial, blasphemy, pride, or vain babbling, or our own anger. Sad to say, the Lion watches us and knows our weakness! No matter, he uses someone or something among us. If we are not careful, he will "eat us up" and our testimony will be destroyed.

"What are we to? WE ARE TO RESIST HIM, not in our own strength, but ‘in the faith.' How do we go about doing that? I asked my husband what ‘in the faith' meant. When we know that, we will know HOW we ‘resist' the devil. Dr. Waite told me that ‘in the faith' means ‘within the parameters of the Words of God.' He said that any other kind of ‘resisting' is wrong. That affirms my thinking that we can't resist with power of our own wisdom or understanding--not by our ‘logic,' or by our own strength. In other words, we can't win by our human ways of resisting others. This ‘resisting' against the Devil must be in a ‘steadfast,' ‘firm,' ‘strong' manner. How can we do this when we are so weak and ill ourselves? (To be continued.)
