I’M SURE YOU HAVE HAD PEOPLE SAY TO YOU, “NO PROBLEM!” in spite of everyone’s observation, that there is one.  Yet, the declaration is usually, “No Problem!”  Why do we human beings keep lying to ourselves, and to others, when we have huge despairs in our lives? This morning Dr. Waite and I read in our Daily Bible Reading what the Apostle Paul wrote when he said in Romans 5:1-5:

“. . . and rejoice in hope of the GLORY of God.  And not only so, but we GLORY in tribulations also: KNOWING THAT TRIBULATION WORKETH PATIENCE . . .  because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost . . .”

OFTEN THAT “TRIBULATION,” WHICH WE PRAY TO BE REMOVED,
IS THE VERY CHISELING GOD IS USING
TO CONFORM US INTO THE IMAGE OF HIS DEAR SON!

Once when one of our teacher-sons was dealing with a parent during a parent-teacher conference, he was reprimanded for saying that a certain student had a “problem.”  The parent complained.  So the teacher was corrected & told,“We do not have ‘problems’ at this school.  We only have ‘issues’!”  Once I was asked to listen on the telephone when we were put on “hold.”  After a long delay, a computer technician came to the phone.  I said, in all innocence to him on the other end of the line, “We have a problem with our computer.”  Immediately I was rebuffed, “Ma’am, we do not have ‘problems’ here.  We only have ‘issues’”!

Did the Virgin Mother Have An Issue or a Problem?

DID MARY ONLY HAVE AN “ISSUE”?  I don’t think so.  She had a “problem” of major import.  You can believe that Joseph the Just, her betrothed husband, considered the pregnancy a “problem”--that’s for sure!   In fact, A DILEMMA!  If God had not spoken to him in a dream, Mary could have been stoned for impurity.  In Bible times, sexual relations before marriage was considered a sin.  It is a sin today; but most of the world seems to be looking the other way.  Judgment Day will come!

“For what the law could not do,

In that it was weak through the flesh,

God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,

And for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us,

Who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Romans 8:3-4

Definition of Two Words

I THINK IT IS TIME TO LOOK UP A FEW DEFINITIONS OF THOSE TWO WORDS--THE DISCARDED ONE (problem) & the current TREND-WORD (issue), DON’T YOU?  

The word “PROBLEM,” as a noun means the following:

(1) a question proposed for solution or consideration,

(2) a question, matter, situation, or person that is perplexing or difficult.

Or “problem” can be used as an adjective, instead of a noun,  in referring to a “problem child.” 

The word “issue” has a myriad of definitions, such as an outflow or an outlet, a result, an offspring, a profit, a point, a putting forth, a magazine, or a discharge of blood, etc.  When there is a dispute still to be decided or when people are at variance with each other in disagreement, we can say “at issue” or “in issue.”  We also can“take issue” with someone with whom we disagree or differ.

No Problem in the King James Bible

Just a few minutes ago, I asked my husband, PASTOR D. A. WAITE, if he could remember any time that the word “problem” occurred in the Bible.  He could not.  Neither could I.  He said that sometimes in theology, a theologian will talk about a “problem passage” of Scripture.  Dr. Waite looked it up in the computer’s concordance and found that not one time did the word “problem” occur in the King James Bible.  Neither did the words “difficult,” “difficulty,” or “hardship.”    Yet, “problem” is seen once in the NKJV, twice in the RSV and NRSV, thrice in the NIV, and twenty-two times in the New Century.  (We didn’t look in any others.)   Could it be that the translators of the KJB did not have the word, “problem,” in their vocabulary?  I’m sure they had “problems.”

The word “issues” is found in only two places in the King James--in Psalms 68:20 , where the Psalmist wrote:  “. . . unto God the Lord belong the issues from death.”  In Proverbs 4:23,  we read, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”  But there are many references to “issue” in regard to bodily functions, disease, or progeny in the KJB.  Remember the woman whom Jesus healed who had an “issue” of blood for twelve years (Luke 8:43)?  Or the man in the Old Testament who had a “running issue” (Leviticus 15:2)?  Or when Jacob spoke of Joseph’s sons as his “issue” (Genesis 48:6). So in today’s world, when we are told that we don’t have “problems”--only “issues,” that is not true.  The truth is that you and I have  many “problems.”  Some come in the form of children, or husbands, or wives, or mothers, or fathers, or financial losses, or church splits, or personality differences, or death, or painful physical grief.  We Christians should not hide our heads in the sand pretending we have no “problems”!  We do!  The difference between the saved person and the unsaved person is that the “born- again” Christian has  the LORD to comfort him or her (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)--to give grace (2 Corinthians 12:8-10) and be held in His Everlasting Arms (Deuteronomy 33:27).

Let me tell you a secret: 

“Problems” mold us to be the man or woman God wants us to be.

In each “problem,” He is conforming us to bear the Image of His Son.  

So if we can get past the first flush of confusion when a “problem” hits us, we can look on them as “blessings” instead of “burdens.”

Our “Caleb Years”

I AM AMAZED AT GOD’S PUTTING SO MANY OPEN DOORS BEFORE US IN OUR “CALEB YEARS.”  Why, Moses did not begin to serve Jehovah until he was eighty years of age. All the previous years were times of preparation of his heart and habits.  If you recall, Caleb was one of the twelve spies that Moses sent into Canaan to spy out the land.  He and Joshua came home with a good report.  The others didn’t.  They saw the giants.  The good reporters saw the LORD!  The people believed the dissenters and were afraid; therefore, they had to wander in the wilderness for forty years.  Remember when Caleb said, “GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN”?    HE WAS  EIGHTY- FIVE YEARS OLD AT THE TIME.  “As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.  Now therefore give me this mountain. . . .”  (Joshua 14:11-12a)  SO GOD HAS OPENED UP DOORS FOR PASTOR WAITE--and me, too--IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, SINCE WE STARTED OUR HOME CHURCH, THAT WE COULD NOT HAVE DREAMED OF PREVIOUSLY.
